Books Of The Year: The Best Fiction of 2012

The Wall Street Journal's books editors pick the best fiction from the past year.
The People of Forever Are Not Afraid
(The People of Forever Are Not Afraid)
By Shani Boianjiu (Hogarth)
(Hogarth)
This harrowing debut novel is a simple coming-of-age story, but Yael, Avishag and Lea aren't the usual awkward, boy-crazy teens. Their backwater town is on the Lebanese border, and all three are about to serve in the Israeli army. Shani Boianjiu gives us an unsparing picture of the youth of a country warped by terrorism and hostile borders. Our reviewer called it 'a dark, riveting window into the mind-state of Israel's younger generation.'
Tell the Wolves I'm Home
(Tell the Wolves I'm Home)
By Carol Rifka Brunt (Dial)
June Elbus is a shy 14-year-old living in the New York suburbs in the mid-1980s. When her beloved uncle dies of AIDS, the angry and grieving June befriends his lover, Toby, and sets in motion an exploration of two generations of sibling rivalry. Carol Rifka Brunt imbues June with the disarming candor of a child and the melancholy wisdom of a heart-scarred adult. Our reviewer praised the 'wonderfully graceful conclusion' of this 'tremendously moving debut novel.'
A Naked Singularity
(A Naked Singularity)
By Sergio De La Pava (Chicago)
(University of Chicago Press)
The plotlines of Sergio De La Pava's debut novel are straight out of a TV drama: a public defender fighting the system. But, as our reviewer noted, the novel's 'chaotic sprawl, black humor and madcap digressions make it a thrilling rejoinder to the tidy story arcs portrayed on television and in most crime fiction.' Initially self-published, this uncompromisingly original book was picked up thanks to the exhortations of online reviewers. It deserves a larger audience still.
