Burberry sent a shiver through the luxury goods sector yesterday with a profit warning that wiped more than a fifth off its share price.

The unexpected update stoked concerns that a slowdown in China and the turmoil in the eurozone were taking their toll on luxury groups, which have proved resilient in the global economic downturn.

The British luxury brand said profits this year would be below some analysts’ expectations due to slower sales growth, sending its shares down 21 per cent – its steepest one-day decline since its market debut a decade ago. “We know we are not alone,” said Stacey Cartwright, Burberry’s finance director, adding that she believed that some of the other long-established “heritage” brands were also suffering.

The comments were taken as an ominous sign for the sector, and sent shares in other luxury goods groups tumbling in Europe and the US.

“It is unlikely to be a single brand issue,” said James Lawson, a director of Ledbury Research.

But Burberry’s downbeat tone contrasted with the optimistic note sounded by Hermès International, its French rival, which increased its annual sales and profitability targets at the end of August.

The warning raises fresh fears that demand for luxury handbags and watches from Chinese consumers, which has been driving the market, had stalled.

“China is a significant ­contributor to the decline,” Ms Cartwright said, but she added that this was not just a “China issue”.

She said that Burberry had no plans to curb its expansion in the country and there had also been fewer customers entering Burberry’s stores in Europe and the US.

Burberry has been culling some of its cheaper product lines, such as handbags in its traditional camel, red, white and black check, and has pushed up the lowest price for its signature trenchcoat to about £1,000.
